Robin was traveling on the interstate behind a car that kept weaving from side to side. It was the middle of the afternoon, but anything could have been the culprit: alcohol, exhaustion, or using a smartphone. At one point the car traveled down the left shoulder for about half a mile. Shortly after, it swerved into the right lane, forcing a car into the next lane. The last Robin saw of the vehicle before she took her exit was the car traveling back onto the left shoulder and moving at a high rate of speed into the grassy median.
It’s safe to say that this distracted driver – whatever form the distraction took – is destined for a car accident, if not on the day that Robin witnessed his frightening driving then soon. People who regularly drive while distracted put themselves at far greater risk for being involved in an auto accident. And other behaviors complicate the matter. (more…)
Drowsy driving is more than just falling asleep at the wheel. “It mimics alcohol-impaired driving in many ways,” says Stephen Higgins, a researcher at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In fact, drowsy driving has been categorized as yet another form of impaired driving, along with drunk driving, distracted driving, and drugged driving. (more…)
With more than 2 million active deer in Michigan, car vs. deer accidents have become a year round problem. Each year, there are nearly 50,000 reported vehicle-deer crashes according to the Michigan State Police. The number of deer-caused car accidents numbered over 47,000 in 2015 and has continued to rise each year, perhaps not surprisingly, over half occurred in the last three months of the year when deer were mating and running about fleeing from hunters. As the holidays quickly approach, holiday travels will intensify. Roads will get busier. And those roads will be populated by plenty of drivers who are operating rental cars and who, in many cases, are not familiar with the territory in which they’re traveling. Unfamiliarity with a highway or area can lead to a greater chance of auto accidents. And when a rental car is involved in a collision, the situation becomes even more complicated. (more…)
Earlier this month, two fatal auto accidents occurred within less than 24 hours and two miles of each other, shedding light on the dangers that pedestrians and bicyclists face as they follow their paths every day. (more…)
Thank goodness for technology. Otherwise, how would we ever figure out how to drive from Point A to Point B? Unfortunately, apps that are helpful in many ways can actually be a major distraction for a driver and lead to a car crash. How do you get the information you need while driving without compromising the attention you should be putting on the road? These apps will test your willpower, especially since some apps are those we feel like we can’t live without, or get anywhere without. (more…)
Motor vehicle operators gamble every time they get behind the wheel and share the road with large commercial vehicles. The scariest part is that there is no guarantee you will be protected from blame in the event of a crash. When an accident occurred between a semi-truck and a car in Michigan in 2014, the victim – the car operator – was blamed for causing the accident during case evaluation and received only liability insurance benefits. After months of research and diligent work, David Femminineo obtained a settlement of $1.5 million for the victim. (more…)
Construction barricades are made to be visible. Large, clear signs, often with flashing arrows or lights, are posted far ahead of any road work. In the immediate area where the work is taking place, there are usually more signs, newly posted speed limits, machinery, construction vehicles, and plenty of workers. None of these clues, however, are enough to stop some elderly drivers, as was the case in Clinton Township earlier this month. (more…)
There are plenty of apps designed to help people drive more safely: They block texts or auto reply so others will know you’re behind the wheel and stop trying to distract you. Simply enough, they are intended to keep you safe. But it’s difficult to combat pop culture fads like Pokémon GO that encourage people to get outside with their eyes trained on their phone instead of on the road in front of them. (more…)
Parent-teen driving agreements (PTDAs) are not a new concept. States, insurers, and safety organizations have developed PTDAs, and a new report is calling on every State Highway Safety Office to create or modify an agreement that is consistent with teen driving laws and reflective of best practices, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). Teen safe driving victim advocate Tim Hollister – whose 17-year-old son was killed in a car crash – developed the report, and cites the incredible value of PTDAs, while also noting that they are not often implemented in households with teen drivers.
