Every spring is a time of celebration for older teens because with the end of the school year comes prom and graduation. Unfortunately, these milestones are often accompanied by car crashes, which are still the leading cause of teen deaths. Take the time now to prepare your teen drivers to be safe. Don’t assume that your otherwise smart 16-, 17-, and 18-year-olds know better and trust they will act accordingly. Be the parental voice of reason in their head so they make the right decisions when it counts.

Drunk driving is an epidemic, but it’s not the only major problem on Michigan roads. Distracted driving has become just as pervasive – and deadly. Though some drivers have been lucky and avoided close calls and fatal car crashes, most do not. Unfortunately, knowing that distracted driving leads to serious auto accidents is not enough to get all people to pay attention to the important job of driving cautiously and with focused intent.

This year, AAA projects that 50 million people still expect to travel, even though the CDC has recommended against Thanksgiving travel because of COVID-19. If you must travel in 2020 to see loved ones for the holidays, you are taking more risks than usual. Car crashes naturally increase during busy holiday travel, and you will also expose yourself to more opportunities to contract COVID-19.

It’s every driver for themselves and, unfortunately, many of your fellow motorists are driving while texting, driving aggressively, driving drunk, or simply not paying attention to the task at hand. Add to this alarming situation a construction zone and the dangers just multiplied. Car crashes in and around summer construction work zones are a common problem.

If the same technology were in place in the United States – and, let’s face it, that probably isn’t far away – how guilty would you be of distracted driving? If you knew Big Brother was watching you, would that be enough to get you to the put the phone down? For some people, even known the frightening statistics of distracted driving car accidents isn’t enough.
